The Art of the In-Between: Why the Moments Become Your Favourite Photos

The most meaningful photographs often happen between the poses. Discover why genuine laughter, quiet glances, spontaneous reactions and everyday interactions can turn a beautiful gallery into a story you will want to remember forever.

When you look back at a gallery years from now, it is not always the perfectly posed portrait that brings everything rushing back.

Sometimes, it is the photograph you almost did not notice.

The laugh that happened right after a pose. The way someone reached for their partner's hand. A child running back to their parents. The quiet moment before walking down the aisle. A dress being adjusted just before the camera clicked.

These are the in-between moments, and they are often where the real story lives.

Beyond the Perfect Pose

Posed photographs have their place. They give you beautiful portraits, clear compositions and images that feel intentional.

But a gallery filled only with perfect poses can sometimes feel like a collection of photographs rather than a story.

The in-between moments add something different. They show how you actually felt, interacted and moved through the day.

That is why I don't believe every beautiful photograph needs to be perfectly posed.

The Moments You Cannot Recreate

A genuine reaction cannot always be planned.

The way someone looks at their partner when they think no one is watching. The excitement on a child's face. A parent fixing their daughter's outfit. The nervous smile before a proposal. A couple laughing because something went slightly wrong.

These tiny moments happen once.

You may not remember exactly when they happened, but seeing the photograph years later can bring you straight back to that feeling.

Giving You Direction Without Taking Away the Moment

Lifestyle photography does not mean leaving you to figure out what to do in front of the camera.

Good direction creates opportunities for real moments to happen.

Instead of asking you to hold the same pose again and again, I might ask you to walk together, talk to each other, play with your children, look at one another or simply enjoy the moment.

The photograph happens in the space between the instruction and the reaction.

That is where things become natural.

Why These Photographs Matter

A beautiful portrait shows you what you looked like.

An emotional photograph can remind you what it felt like to be there.

Years from now, you might forget what everyone was wearing or exactly how the location looked. But you will remember the feeling of your child's hand in yours, the way your partner looked at you, or the laughter that filled the room.

Those are the photographs that become part of your family's story.

At Pixelicious, We Look for the Story

For me, photography is not about creating a gallery of perfect moments.

It is about creating a gallery that feels alive.

A little polished, a little spontaneous, beautifully directed but never forced.

Because sometimes the photograph you love the most is not the one where everyone was ready.

It is the one where everyone simply forgot the camera was there.
